A real estate conversation in Costa Rica once left me completely confused...

Someone told me they owned "una manzana" of land.

An apple? 🍎

Nope.

They explained that a manzana was a unit of land. They also told me it was the same as a hectare. That part wasn't correct.

In Costa Rica, one manzana is about 7,000 square metres, or roughly 0.7 hectares (about 1.75 acres).

As for why the same word means both "apple" and a land measurement? That's one of those language questions that doesn't have a clear answer. There are several theories, but no real consensus.

It's a good reminder that learning a language isn't just about translation or vocabulary. It's also about learning the culture, the history, and the way people use words in everyday life.

The Three Sisters, or milpa, is an Indigenous agricultural practice with deep roots in Mesoamerica. Rather than growing corn, beans, and squash separately, they're planted together because each benefits the others.

🌽 Corn provides a living trellis.
🫘 Beans climb the corn and nourish the soil.
🎃 Squash spreads across the ground, shading the soil, conserving moisture, and helping suppress weeds.

It's a beautiful reminder that nature rarely thrives in isolation.

I think there's a lesson in that for those of us who choose to build a life in another country.

It's easy to build a life abroad within circles that feel familiar. Comfort has its place. But if we never step beyond it, we may miss one of the greatest gifts of living in another country: becoming part of the place we've chosen to call home. 🌱

The deeper I get into writing my new book, the more I find myself digging into a question that's been at the heart of my work for years:

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO RELOCATE ETHICALLY?

Some people might use the phrase "decolonizing relocation" to describe a similar idea. While that concept influenced some of my thinking, I've also come to understand that the term has a much deeper meaning tied to Indigenous sovereignty, land, and self-determination.

Setting terminology aside for a moment, here's the question I keep coming back to:

How do we move to another country in a way that is thoughtful, respectful, and aware of the impact we may have on the people who already call it home?

For me, it starts with recognizing that another country isn't here to meet our needs, wants, and expectations. It's a place where people already live, work, raise families, have traditions, and face everyday challenges, just like anywhere.

It's about learning, listening, participating, and understanding that our choices can have ripple effects on the people who already call that place home.

Here are some of the ideas that come to mind for me. →
