On World Environment Day, I’m grateful to live in On World Environment Day, I’m grateful to live in a place that continues to invest in protecting the natural world. It’s one of the many reasons I fell in love with Costa Rica, and one of the many reasons I moved here and stayed.

In this video, all animals were wild, and photos were taken with a high zoom lens because, again, we should never be close to wildlife!

Enjoy… all four monkeys🐒 that can be found in Costa Rica, plus two types of toucans and a baby sloth 🦥 + more 🐬 🦜 🐊 🦎 🌋 🏞️🌊☀️ ❤️

Fourteen years living abroad in Costa Rica. One da Fourteen years living abroad in Costa Rica. One day back in the United States. ✈️

People often ask if I’ll ever move back, and the truth is, Costa Rica has been home for a very long time now.

Living abroad has given me experiences I never could have imagined. Some wonderful. Some difficult. Many that challenged what I thought I knew about myself and the world around me.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about helping others explore this path thoughtfully.

Because moving abroad is about so much more than beaches, lower costs, retirement plans, or a change of scenery. It’s a major life decision that touches nearly every part of your life.

Here you’ll find honest conversations about the realities of living abroad, the questions worth asking, and the things most people don’t think about until after they’ve moved.

If you’ve ever wondered what life abroad is really like, follow along. I’ll share the lessons, mistakes, surprises, and realities that come with calling another country home.

I've lived in Costa Rica for 14 years. I've built I've lived in Costa Rica for 14 years. I've built a life here, bought property here, had a business here, learned the language, made friendships here, and plan to stay.

So when concerns are raised about the future of this country, my reaction isn't: "Well, it's happening everywhere."

My reaction is: "Okay, let's talk about what's happening here."

Because this is my home.

I think that's what feels missing from many of these conversations. When you're connected to a place, you tend to care what happens to it.

You get curious.
You ask questions.
You think about the consequences of your choices.

When a country matters to you, "it's happening everywhere" isn't the end of the conversation. It's the beginning of one.

Pesticide use in Costa Rica is an important topic, Pesticide use in Costa Rica is an important topic, and one I dedicated an entire section to in my book because there’s so much misinformation surrounding it.

A significant portion of Costa Rica’s pesticide use comes from large-scale banana and pineapple production, but pesticides are also used on many smaller farms, including the family farm down the road or even your next-door neighbor’s property, because they’re often the quickest, cheapest, and easiest solution.

Costa Rica is a global conservation leader in many ways, but it’s not a pesticide-free paradise.

I moved to Costa Rica in May 2012, and in December I moved to Costa Rica in May 2012, and in December of that same year, Costa Rica passed a law making sport hunting illegal.

I still remember how deeply that resonated with me. To live in a country that values and protects wildlife.

Of course, that doesn't mean animals are always safe. Habitat loss, road accidents, and illegal hunting still threaten the wildlife that lives amongst us. But the law reflects something many people love about this country: wildlife belongs in the wild.

It's one of the many reasons I fell in love with Costa Rica, and one of the many reasons I'm still here.
