What does living abroad with a chronic illness or invisible disability really look like? And how do you know whether it’s a realistic option for you?

It’s something I understand from personal experience, although I didn’t have these challenges when I first moved to Costa Rica.

I’ve had clients reach out to me because they know I live with chronic illness, and they want help figuring out whether moving abroad is realistic for them. If you’re asking yourself some of those same questions, I’d be happy to talk through them with you.

My life today is very different from the one you see in this video. There are things I really miss, and there are things I’ve had to accept that I still don’t particularly like.

For the past six years, I’ve also been figuring out what it means to live abroad with an invisible disability, not as a hypothetical or something I help others prepare for, but as my own life.

Costa Rica was already home when I got sick, and it’s been home through everything that came after.

There are still challenges that I’m figuring out how to manage, and days that are harder than others. But I’m doing my best to make the most of each day, with what I have and what I’m able to do.

From secluded eco lodges to beautiful boutique hotels, traveling through Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama has taken me to places I’ll never forget. Here’s why I keep choosing them over Airbnb’s…

→ Neighborhoods need neighbors. When homes become vacation rentals, there are fewer options for people looking for long-term housing. And beyond housing availability, there’s the impact on neighborhoods when permanent residents are gradually replaced by a revolving door of tourists. Even when those rentals are operating legally and paying taxes, that doesn’t put the homes back on the long-term rental market.

→ And then there’s the money hotels and lodges spend beyond their own properties. Food, beverages, cleaning supplies, equipment, repairs, maintenance and all the other things it takes to keep a hotel running. Think about how many farmers, producers, suppliers and service providers benefit from that ongoing business.

→ There’s also a big difference between creating work and creating jobs. Formal employment comes with legal protections, including CAJA contributions, paid vacation and aguinaldo. Hiring someone to clean or maintain a vacation rental doesn’t always mean they’re getting the same benefits that come with a formal job.

→ I’ve seen (mostly) foreign-owned communities set up their own short-term rental booking systems to avoid paying taxes. Moving bookings off Airbnb doesn’t make those tax obligations disappear. Benefiting from everything Costa Rica has to offer should also come with a willingness to contribute your fair share.

None of this means every Airbnb owner is irresponsible or every hotel operates perfectly. I know there are responsible short-term rental owners, and I appreciate that.

For me, it comes down to being mindful about where I spend my money and how those choices affect the country I’ve called home for 14 years. Choosing eco hotels and lodges is about supporting the kinds of businesses and employment practices I want to see more of.
